Reading Log: #1 Conflict "The Magician's Elephant" by Kate Dicamillo- The main conflict of this story is that Peter a 10-year-old boy starts to wonder about his supposed dead sister, Adele. This is a conflict to Vilna Lutz, an old man training Peter to become a soldier since this would mean Vilna Lutz had lied and Peter would leave and Vilna Lutz would be all alone. Peter goes to a fortune teller that tells him he must follow an elephant. In another part of town, 7-year-old Adele starts having dreams of an elephant knocking on the orphanage doors. Peter starts to remember how Adele had cried in his arms and that she wasn't stillborn like Vilna Lutz said, Vilna Lutz breaks down and confesses. Peter leaves Vilna Lutz and goes to see the elephant everyone is talking about and realizes she is depressed and will die if he doesn't do anything about it, page 129 indicates this "The elephant must go home or she would surely die." so Peter decides to help her. When Peter decides he must ask the magician, who is in prison to help the elephant go back to where she belongs by using his powers, they pass the orphanage, and Adele runs out to see the elephant, Peter instantly knows it's his sister and they reunite. The conflict is resolved when the Leo and Gloria Matienne, who live under Vilna Lutz adopt them both and Vilna Lutz who with the experience of war has gone crazy by the way he talks in page 196""We must ouflank the enemy!"he would shout. "Where oh where is mt foot?", when he is then comforted by Adele. At the end everyone is happy.
Reading Log #2 Characters "Not As We Know It" Tom Avery- There are so far two main characters in the book. They are Jamie and his brother Ned. It hasn’t been said specifically but by the context clues we can tell that Ned is sick. Near the beginning of the book it states in page 3, “I could hear Ned, inside on the sofa, coughing his lungs up as Mum beat on his chest.”, we can assume this is a kind of treatment he is getting for some type of illness Still there is another clue as to this as it states in the same page, “I hammered the last nail in place as Ned, his treatment over…” The characteristics of both boys are adventurous, the book says of their collection of things they have found while exploring at the beach near their home. We can also tell they very persistent to collect many interesting things as in page 2 it states "Once we found the rotted carcass of a seal. Ned said we should take it home as part of our mission to seek out new life", honestly most people wouldn't try to sneak a dead animal into their garage. So far it cannot be determined if they are static or dynamic.
Reading Log: #3 GATE Depth & Complexity Icon+Content Imperatives "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow"Washington Irving- The Icon I choose for this story is rules. This is because the main character Ichabod Crane is hoping to win the heart of Katrina Van Tassel. It applies to rules since another man Abraham Van Brunt also wants Katrina. If Ichabod a scrawny man compared to Abraham. When Ichabod tries to make a move Abraham and his "gang" are there. In the text it says, pager 51 "...would fain have carries matters to open warfare, and have settles their pretensions to the lady according to the mode of those most concise and simple reasoners, the knights-errant of yore-by single combat; but Ichabod was too conscious of the superior might of his adversary to enter the lists against him..." Ichabod has to follow by Abraham's rules or something bad could happen to him. Abraham isn't afraid to fight, and it is rather obvious who would win. Also Abraham would love to fight the text, page 45 says "...when any madcap prank or rustic brawl occurred in the vicinity always shook their head and warranted Brom Bones (Abraham) was at the bottom of it." We can tell by this that Abraham is rather mischievous and Ichabod has to play by the rules. That is why so far, rules apllies to this story.
